When I started having children, I decided I would use natural foods, and supplements where necessary. Even though my Mum used white flour for everything, I had found, after reading Adele Davis’s Book, Let’s Have Healthy Children, that using wholemeal was much healthier than white products.

I made my own bread. But I had to start off with white flour with a small percentage of wholemeal, then gradually increase the wholemeal until we were having 100% wholemeal. That was because my husband had been brought up on white bread and didn’t want to change, so I made the change gradually.

My pancakes were very nutritious. They were made with wholemeal flour, bran, wheatgerm, eggs, mollasses and milk. They were very filling but also healthy. My children loved the health damper I used to make them for afternoon tea after school. It had mixed dried fruit, wholemeal self raising flour, nutmeg and cinnamon and water.
